Connecting the Global Discussion to Patients' Experiences in Tanzania
One of the questions arising from the Global Heart Hub Unite Summit 2026 in Dublin is how patient organizations can help create more meaningful opportunities for patients and caregivers to participate in decisions affecting their care.

The discussions in Dublin are relevant to the experiences of patients and families living with cardiovascular conditions in Tanzania.
Just days before the summit, we published the story of a student from Mbeya who has lived with rheumatic heart disease for almost 8 years. Our team met him during a Colors to Save Hearts school awareness session, where he shared his experience of diagnosis and the regular injections he receives to protect his heart.
Although he understands the importance of his treatment, he described the fear and discomfort he experiences with the injections. He also questioned why his heart condition had not been identified during his first hospital visit.
His experience raises issues that were also discussed at the summit, particularly the importance of listening to patients, building trust and understanding their experiences when planning healthcare services.
For healthcare providers, regular injections are part of preventing further heart damage. For a child receiving them over many years, the experience also involves fear, discomfort and the need for continued support.
The student's story illustrates why patients and families should have opportunities not only to share their experiences but also to contribute to discussions about how care can be improved.
One of the questions arising from the summit is how patient organizations, including The One New Heart Tanzania, can help create more meaningful opportunities for patients and caregivers to participate in decisions affecting their care.
