Improving Heart Care for Children in Zanzibar: Working Together for a Healthier Future

In November 2023, we received an invitation from the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar seeking a partnership to enhance heart treatment for children in Zanzibar. This was especially meaningful after our recent surgical mission in Dodoma.

Heart disease is a major concern globally, causing millions of deaths every year. In Tanzania alone, where around 2.1 million babies are born annually, there are 8 cases of congenital heart defects in every 1000 live births. Sadly, due to factors like cost and awareness, not all of them receive the care they need.

Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania with a population of nearly 2 million, faces similar challenges. While it has 189 hospitals and clinics spread across Unguja and Pemba islands, many patients still have to travel to the mainland or abroad for heart treatments. Additionally, diagnosing heart issues can be tricky, especially without specialized equipment and expertise.

But there's hope. Following discussions with Zanzibar's health authorities and hospitals like KMKM and JKU, we've decided to take action.

We have planned to collaborate with these hospitals to establish a pediatric cardiac clinic, which will serve as a center for pediatric cardiac diagnosis. This clinic will provide an accurate assessment of the magnitude of the problem, thereby paving the way for treatment planning, including medical, surgical and catheter-based interventions.

Together, we're determined to make heart care more accessible and effective in undeserved regions.
