Our History

We aim to transform lives through affordable and sustainable heart treatment services in Tanzania.
Our vision is to have a community where children with heart defects can access treatment without barriers.
In 2019, we started supporting affordable heart treatment for children in Tanzania. Each year, less than 2% of more than 4,000 children needing heart surgery get it.
Under the mentorship of Prof. William Novick and the Global Cardiac Alliance (GCA), TONHT helped equip the cardiac theatres in a public hospital and started hosting a visiting team to provide free heart treatment. This initiative led to 7 heart missions in 5 regions, providing free heart diagnoses for 1,005 children and free heart surgeries for 50 children.
The One New Heart Tanzania is a member of the World Heart Federation (WHF).

One New Heart Foundation is a U.S.-based nonprofit closely affiliated with The One New Heart Tanzania, working together to provide lifesaving heart treatments for children in Tanzania. Through this partnership, we combine resources and expertise to maximize impact and improve access to critical pediatric cardiac care.

Tanzania Mega Heart Mission

Mission Objective: Increase children’s heart surgeries in Tanzania to improve their health and lives.
  • Identification: List children needing surgeries.
  • Fundraising: Raise funds through Mega Heart Members.
  • Surgical Camp: Host annual surgical camps in Tanzania.

Nationwide Free Children's Heart Screening Program (2024-2026)

  • Goal: Screen 25.8 million children under 15 by March 2026.
  • Progress: Started March 2024 at Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital (104 screened).
  • Impact: Improve early diagnosis and treatment, define CHD prevalence, build healthcare capacity, and reduce CHD mortality and morbidity.
