Rayhan: surgery in India and a hard recovery
Rayhan's heart problem went unnoticed in infancy. His family, from Uganda, faced financial hardship, a long journey and a serious complication after surgery.
Rayhan's heart problem began in infancy, but his young parents did not notice it. He had one illness after another, including a urinary tract infection, malaria and other infections. Only then did the real cause become clear: a hole in his heart.
The family faced the cost of treatment in the middle of financial hardship. For a long time there seemed to be no way forward.
The One New Heart Tanzania took up Rayhan's case and, with support, he travelled for surgery at Sanjeevan Hospital in Raipur, India.
The period after surgery was difficult. Rayhan developed a kidney complication that left him seriously ill and unconscious. The care of the medical team, and the timely arrival of a new dialysis machine, brought him through.
Today Rayhan is well. We are grateful to everyone who travelled this road with him and his family.
Rayhan's recovery shows why treatment support cannot end at the operating table. Complications happen, and a family far from home needs people beside them.
