Scarlett was born on May 18, 2016, as the only child of her mother, Jane. For the first few years of her life, Jane didn’t realize that Scarlett was suffering from a complex heart condition. It wasn’t until 2020 that Jane took Scarlett to TMJ Hospital, where a pediatrician diagnosed her with a serious heart issue. They were then referred to the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI) for further care. At first, the severity of Scarlett’s condition was not fully realized by her doctors.

How Jane Learned About The One New Heart Tanzania
Jane found hope through a network of friends. A friend of hers knew someone familiar with The One New Heart Tanzania and connected Jane to the organization’s mission in Dodoma.

In July 2021, during our first pediatric cardiac surgical mission in Dodoma, we met Scarlett. She underwent diagnostic catheterizations, which showed that she was a candidate for surgery either in India or the USA.

Scarlett’s Journey to Recovery
Scarlett’s heart surgery was successfully performed in India in November 2022. The procedure was a triumph, marking a new chapter in her life. The successful surgery not only mended her heart but also unlocked a world of opportunities for Scarlett to grow and thrive.

A New Talent Blossoms
Since her surgery, Scarlett has grown into a healthy, vibrant young girl. One of the most beautiful developments has been her discovery and love for painting. Scarlett has become an accomplished hand painter, expressing her gratitude and joy through her art.

A Heartfelt Tribute
Today, Scarlett created something truly special: a drawing of our organization’s logo as a tribute to The One New Heart Tanzania. Her artwork symbolizes the profound impact that life-saving heart surgery can have on a child’s life, allowing them to explore their talents and pursue their dreams.
